How many connections are you away from your dream job?

If you're not loving the view from your desk right now, read on. Your dream job doesn't have to stay in your dreams... in fact you could be much closer to getting it than you realize. Harvey Nash's National Recruiting Director, Michael Tosto, shares the areas where some extra effort will pay off in the dream job department.

Start a conversation
It's important to connect with everyone you meet in any professional setting, be it colleagues in other offices, people you meet at networking events, sitting next to you on the plane, at a pub--anywhere. Small talk can turn into something big for your career, so start a conversation!

Attend as many networking events as possible, whether it's a conference, trade show, networking dinner, and you'll meet people who--if they can't give you your dream job--know someone who knows someone who can help you get there.

Know your industry
It's important to know the ins and outs of your job, but you should also be knowledgeable about the field you're in as a whole. Read magazines, newspapers, newsletters, online or offline, to stay informed and up-to-speed about the industry.

And perhaps one of the most important ways you can land that perfect position is to show your passion for what you do. Make that passion obvious to others in the industry that you speak with, and it won't go unnoticed.
