Carly Fiorina to Keynote Harvey Nash Leadership Lecture Event

Seasoned corporate leader to share firsthand insight with global business executives addressing innovation, job creation and the looming talent crisis

NEW YORK - February 26, 2013 - Harvey Nash, a global executive search, professional recruitment and IT outsourcing service provider, will host its third annual Leadership Lecture: Leadership in a Changing World Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at The Carlyle hotel in Manhattan. Political commentator and former Hewlett-Packard (HP) CEO Carly Fiorina will headline the invitation-only event as keynote speaker. Opening remarks begin at 8:15 a.m.

Taking aim at the challenging economic environment, Fiorina will focus comments on strategies that sustain and strengthen companies in times of economic turmoil including those tested and proven during her reign as head of HP, one of the world's legendary technology companies. Joining her on the subjects of innovation, competitiveness and job creation, Harvey Nash executives Bob Miano, USA President & CEO, and Albert Ellis, Global CEO, will share the podium providing marketplace data on the looming IT talent war, the unsustainable H1-B visa policy currently in place in the U.S. and an education dilemma that is crying out for business involvement.

"As a business community, we are facing an IT skills cliff that will exacerbate an already slow recovery. We see it every day in our business," said Harvey Nash USA President & CEO Miano. "If U.S. businesses are going to compete successfully around the globe, we have to help develop innovative educational opportunities for our brightest students and for those workers looking for effective training and advancement opportunities. The severe shortage of technical talent in the U.S. today coupled with the odd connection between the political hot potatoes of immigration and unemployment have created a talent crisis of enormous proportions."

"Our economy is slowly recovering from the recession," notes Fiorina. "But growth rates and employment will remain sub-par until we address the structural issues that are holding our economy back. We know we need to tackle tax reform, entitlement reform and deficit reduction. As difficult as these are, they are insufficient. We also need more entrepreneurs to start small businesses and succeed. And we must reform education, immigration and our approach to innovation."

The Harvey Nash USA Leadership Lecture event is a gathering of more than 200 Chief Executive and Chief Information Officers interested in economic news and focused on the role of U.S. business in a global marketplace. Prior keynote speakers include U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry (2012), former U.K. Minister of Trade and Commerce and advisor to Tony Blair, Lord Digby Jones (2011) and International Business Professor at Georgetown University and former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce under Ronald Reagan, James P. Moore, Jr. (2011).

General attendance is by invitation only, to request an invitation, contact Huong Thai. Credentialed members of the media are invited to attend by contacting Ann Warren.

To view the live event online go to http://new.livestream.com/harveynashusa/leadership2013 beginning at 8:15 a.m. ET.

ClearEdge Marketing, Harvey Nash and McCann Partners Team to Launch ARA Chicago, Supporting Women in Technology

Program to focus on Attracting, Retaining and Advancing women in IT

Chicago (February 26, 2013) - ClearEdge Marketing, Harvey Nash and McCann Partners today announced the launch of ARA Chicago, a group committed to supporting women in technology by helping Attract, Retain and Advance women in the traditionally male-driven field. ARA's goal is to provide up-and-coming women in IT with career support and mentoring. In partnership with the Illinois Technology Association (ITA), ARA will host four Chicago-based events annually beginning in April 2013.

Harvey Nash Managing Director and Vice President Jane Gilligan, McCann Partners President and Founder Megan McCann, and ClearEdge Marketing CEO and Founder Leslie Vickrey decided to form ARA based on the success of the Chicago Executive Women's Networking Group, which they founded more than eight years ago. The group, which began as a quarterly dinner with three leaders in technology, has grown into a network of more than 150 women in the technology industry across Chicago and a partnership with the ITA, providing additional value to its membership base and supporting its focus on talent-driven programs.

"We wanted to offer a more formal process for supporting and mentoring women in technology," said McCann. "We are committed to helping bridge the talent and gender gaps in the technology industry by helping companies attract, retain and advance women in IT."

Addressing a Significant Need in IT
According to the Harvey Nash CIO Survey of 450 IT leaders surveyed in the U.S., only 9 percent are female compared to only 7 percent globally. This represents a decline three years running in the U.S. from 12 percent in 2010 and 11 percent in 2011 and 9 percent in 2012. Almost a third of respondents said their IT organization has no women at all in management. Moreover, 56 percent of respondents indicated a technology skills shortage would prevent their organization from keeping up with the pace of change.

"I'm thrilled to be a part of ARA Chicago, which will deliver much needed services to women in our industry," commented Ellen Barry, principal of the EBarry Group and former CIO of the City of Chicago's Metropolitan Pier & Exposition Authority." As women in technology, we must focus on mentoring and championing other women in all phases of their careers and lives."

The first ARA meeting -- a speed networking event at which mentees will be matched with CIO mentors -- will take place on Thursday, April 4 at 5:30 pm at the ITA offices, 200 South Wacker Drive, 15th Floor, Chicago. For more information about the program, please send an email to ara@clearedgemarketing.com.

U.S. CIOs Adjusting for Growth Says Harvey Nash/TelecityGroup 2012 CIO Survey

May 15, 2012

Annual survey reveals CIOs taking on more strategic role and shifting priorities to meet new business goals; key challenges are technology skills shortage and role of women in IT.

Wayne, NJ, May 14, 2012 - Growth is resurfacing in the technology corridors of U.S. businesses according to the 2012 CIO Survey conducted by Harvey Nash USA in association with leading data center operator, TelecityGroup. The 7th annual survey of CIOs and Information Technology (IT) leaders in the U.S., revealed positive findings about growth in U.S. business and its impact on the CIO, including a new focus on improving time-to-market of new products and services, enabling mobile commerce, and increasing budgets. Acquiring and retaining IT talent concerns and the gender disparity of women in IT were also revealed in the Survey.

"This year's Survey shows that U.S. CIOs are shaking off the bunker mentality that held them captive the past few years since the Great Recession, and they are beginning to focus on strategic growth activities again," said Harvey Nash USA President and CEO Robert J. Miano. "Their shifting priorities align completely with the anecdotal evidence that we are gathering every day from our customers. Case in point, every single offshoring project that we have discussed in the last 12 months has been for digital media or had a digital media component. The impact of digital media has been seismic."

Key Indicators of Growth:
• Increasing Budgets: More than half of U.S. CIOs (51 percent) in companies of all sizes report increases in their budgets this year (up 12 percent over 2011); and equally important almost half (46 percent) are anticipating another budget bump in the next 12 months. In 2011 budget increases in smaller companies foretold the broader increase in 2012.
• Demand for Increased Time-to-Market: Of the areas of focus for CIOs, the category that grew the most in 2012 was improving time-to-market for new products and services, underlining the importance of growth and expansion planning.
• Expanding Digital Media: As new tools and technology enter the marketplace, a significant majority of U.S. CIOs (80 percent) report that they are promoting the use of digital media within the company, including 55 percent who say they are developing applications for tablet devices.
• Global Reach: Almost two thirds of U.S. CIOs (59 percent) have a global or international role, which reflects the wider economic trends of globalization. This is up from 37 percent in 2011.

"As Boards look ahead seeking new ways to grow and innovate in an increasingly complex data-rich world, the role of the CIO takes on greater importance and increasing responsibility. We are seeing the DNA of IT leaders changing as they have become more representative of their internal and external customers. It is a very exciting time to be a CIO," said TelecityGroup CEO Michael Tobin.

Key Areas of Concern: Skills Shortage and Women in IT

Skills Shortage
• 56 percent of U.S. CIOs indicated their organizations are suffering from a technology skills shortage.
• 56 percent also say this shortage would limit their organizations' ability to keep up with the pace of change, up from 49 percent in 2011.
• 90 percent of U.S. CIOs expressed some level of concern about retaining talent.
• Enterprise architecture is the most needed skill for U.S. organizations rising five percent since last year.
• The skill set that increased the most in demand is mobile solutions, up nine percent. Now more than a quarter of all U.S. CIOs are seeking additional talent in the mobile space.

Women in IT
• Of the CIO's responding to the survey this year in the U.S., only nine percent are female compared to only seven percent globally. This represents a decline three years running in the U.S. from 12 percent in 2010 to 11 percent in 2011 and nine percent this year.
• Almost a third of U.S. CIOs report that they have no women in management within their IT organizations.
• Piling on, only 52 percent believe women are under-represented in their IT department.
• CIOs in the same survey say that the most important value women add to the IT function is their ability to form good relationships with the business, and almost half say that women bring innovation and creativity to technology.

According to Patricia Anderson, chief technology officer at Apartments.com, "At Classified Ventures, including Apartments.com, Cars.com, as well as Corporate Technology, we recognize the rich value that diversity in general brings to the business, and we remain committed to encouraging a diverse workplace. Specifically related to women in technology positions, all technology groups at Classified Ventures increased the number of females on their teams over the past year, and overall we continue to have a number of women in management positions. In addition we are developing a woman's leadership mentoring program with the goal of increasing the number of woman in leadership roles across our entire Classified Ventures organization."

Other Survey Highlights:

Outsourcing
• With the talent crunch it is no surprise that outsourcing is up and is expected to continue rising during the coming year. In 2011, 10 percent of U.S. CIOs spent up to half their budget on outsourcing; in 2012 that number jumped to 15 percent of CIOs.
• Marking an upward trend in recent years, 43 percent of U.S. CIOs plan to increase their outsourcing investment next year, up from 41 percent last year and 38 percent in 2010.
• 45 percent plan to increase their offshore work in 2012.

"We believe that the value of the U.S. dollar is playing a pivotal role in the decisions that are leading U.S. companies to shift offshore work away from India towards China and back to the U.S.," explained Miano from Harvey Nash USA.

The Changing CIO Role
• More CIOs report directly to the Chief Executive than in 2010 (31 percent, up from 21 percent in 2010).
• 67 percent say the role of the CIO has become more strategic in recent years.

"CIOs now have a seat at the executive table, and we are seeing that trend continue across the board both in the U.S. and around the world. Companies are realizing the power of bringing the CIO into the conversation at the highest level, and the need for strategic, technically savvy counsel from the CIO," concluded Miano.

About the Survey

More than 2,400 CIOs and IT leaders around the world participated in the 14th Annual Global CIO Survey that reports on the state of the CIO and international technology trends.

450 U.S. IT leaders responded and their comments comprise the U.S. section of the annual Survey. Of U.S. respondents, 42 percent were CIOs or C-level executives, 39 percent were senior vice presidents or directors of IT.

About the research:

1. The 2012 CIO Survey was conducted online by Harvey Nash from Dec. 5, 2011 to Feb. 29, 2012. 2,400 senior IT professionals from around the world completed the survey.

2. The 2012 CIO Survey is global in nature and was available in many countries, different languages and currencies. For ease of production the survey is written in American English and the currency used is the U.S. Dollar.

Harvey Nash's Inspire Reports Women Bring Radical New Perspectives to the Board

April 27, 2012

New York (April 9, 2012) - Women are bringing a much needed source of emotional intelligence (EI) to the boardroom table and as a result improving a board's ability to innovate, make consensual decisions and connect with customers and staff according to a survey by Inspire, the business network for senior board-level women supported by Harvey Nash.

The survey, Return on Diversity, completed by 326 board-level executives across 19 countries, revealed that almost two-thirds of respondents (64 percent) believe women are bringing a greater level of EI to the board, which in turn brings greater cultural understanding (91 percent believed better EI boosted the board's ability in this area), better board consensus (80 percent) and greater creativity and innovation (75 percent).

In addition, the survey revealed that 92 percent of survey respondents believe that women bring new and different perspectives to the board, with participants' comments ranging from how women take a different approach to risk to how women offer greater pragmatism in decision making.

While most respondents agreed greater EI at the board level had a positive impact on the soft attributes of the board, less consensus surfaced on how this affected other attributes. For instance, regarding a board's ability to make bold decisions, most (60 percent) respondents believed having greater board EI had no affect or for 12 percent of respondents had a negative effect. This was even more pronounced when looking at speed of decision making where 68 percent believed EI had no positive effect, and 13 percent felt it was negative.

Carol Rosati, co-founder of Inspire and director of Harvey Nash, said: "At a time when companies are desperately seeking new ways to create revenue streams through innovation and entering new markets, the need for creative thinking and cultural understanding of customers and staff has never been greater. This survey shows that companies bringing women onto boards can be one way they achieve great board emotional intelligence, and in turn better board effectiveness.

Simultaneously the survey shows greater board EI is an overwhelmingly positive thing, and it also shows that EI can make boards operate differently. Boards must recognize that becoming diverse is more than just a change in their makeup; it can often create a change in their approach altogether."

The survey also looked at how to achieve greater female board membership. Respondents overwhelmingly rejected the idea of government quotas (only 6 percent supported this option) preferring the emphasis to be on companies to cultivate and develop their own female talent pipeline (48 percent). A further 29 percent of respondents believed the main barrier to female progression is the attitude among C-level male executives.

Alexa Bailey, co-founder of Inspire and consultant at Harvey Nash, said: "Women are not looking for a prop to help them into senior roles but instead, a change in attitude from the board itself. A specific case in point is the Nomination and Governance appointment Committee. All too often the selection criteria for new board members is based on whether the person has had previous experience at board level, rather than does this person have the right set of skills and values to do the job? It's an important difference especially if we are going to evolve the talent pipeline for future board leaders. Another change is around support given in both the domestic and professional sphere. Achieving gender balance in the boardroom and at the executive level requires support both in the workplace and at home, where domestic support services, childcare and supportive partners have a powerful impact on an executive's ability to focus on work."

Senator John Kerry to Address Challenges Facing U.S. Business at Harvey Nash Leadership Event

Kerry to Share Business Strategies to Address Unemployment, Increase Financial Stability

New York (February 28, 2012) - Harvey Nash, a global executive search, professional recruitment and IT outsourcing service provider, will host its annual Leadership Lecture: What Lies Ahead for American Business. The March 2nd event features Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), who will discuss the growing need for American innovation to compete and win in the 21st Century global economy. The executive audience will hear from Kerry and Harvey Nash leadership on topics including sustained job creation, deficit reduction, balanced international trade, affordable health care coverage, financial stability and economic stimulus.

With a focus on placing top IT and executive talent for American business, Harvey Nash executives Robert J. Miano, Harvey Nash USA President & CEO, and Albert Ellis, Harvey Nash Global CEO, will share insight into where jobs are now, what technology skills employers are seeking despite high unemployment levels, and what the U.S. can do to address its shrinking talent pool. They will join Kerry in addressing more than 200 top executives from J.P. Morgan Chase, Credit Suisse, Facebook, Hearst, McGraw Hill, Conde Nast, WPP, Dell Computer Corporation, Equifax, Associated Press, The Economist, CNN, Viacom, Starwood Hotels, Pfizer, Cushman & Wakefield, Oracle and Accenture, among others.

"If we're going to out-compete the rest of the world tomorrow, we have to out-innovate them today, and that starts by facing our fiscal challenge honestly and intelligently, creating the business and economic environment we need to create jobs, drive innovation, spur investment, and compete in the global marketplace," said Sen. Kerry.

"We look forward to hearing Senator Kerry's insight into the state of American business. Because of his role as Chairman of the Communications, Technology, and the Internet subcommittee of the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, he brings a unique perspective on how to overcome obstacles and what's next for U.S. business," said Miano.

He continued, "Among other things, our event will address jobs and the economy, the biggest factors affecting the success of U.S. businesses today. A major contributor to our weakened economy is not the lack of jobs, but rather the lack of talent. Contributing to this skill shortage, we see workers leaving the job supply, fewer college graduates in technology, and laws that make it difficult to bring talent into the U.S. Unless we change course, the U.S. is looking at slow 2-3 percent growth for the next 18 months."

The Harvey Nash Leadership Lecture: What Lies Ahead for American Business will take place at The Plaza Hotel on Friday, March 2, 2012 from 8:00-10:00 a.m. General attendance is limited and by invitation only. Walk-ins not accepted. To request an invitation, contact Matthew Leva at 973-646-2112. Credentialed members of the media are invited to register by contacting Ann Warren.

The Harvey Nash 2011 CIO Survey: Innovation Rules the Post-recession IT Landscape

Wayne, NJ (May, 9, 2011) - The 2011 CIO Survey was conducted in association with PA Consulting Group to assess the current direction of IT strategy and the prevailing trends within IT leadership the world over. Now in its sixth year in the U.S. and 13th globally, the survey informs, inspires and provides IT leaders with invaluable benchmarks.

This year's survey results revealed a markedly new post-recession IT landscape. As one CIO pointed out, "It's easy to look good in boom times. It's the tough times that reveal who the real leaders are."

Now that the recession is abating and IT budgets are increasing, IT leaders are emerging with increased scope of responsibility and influence. Additionally, the focus on cost-cutting and operational efficiency has shifted back to innovation. While the "Utility CIO" is still in play, the "Innovation CIO" -- who is 29 percent more likely to use innovation instead of cost savings as a competitive advantage -- has reemerged.

Another interesting finding is that less than half (42 percent) of global CIOs felt their organization suffered from a shortage of technology skills. This is a fall of 16 percent from 2010. However, over 89 percent of global IT leaders are concerned about keeping their best and brightest performers. Thirty-five percent express "great concern" that competitors would try to poach key talent in the next two months.

Here are a few more of the many insights IT leaders relayed to Harvey Nash that are available in the 2011 CIO Survey report:

IT leaders prize innovation, but struggle to fulfill its potential.
Almost three-quarters (74 percent) of global CIO Survey respondents believe that if they don't innovate and embrace new technology, their company will lose market share. However, only one-third (34 percent) think they have achieved anything close to their innovation potential.

IT leaders increase their use of outsourcing.
Almost one-third of global CIOs (28 percent) will spend up to a quarter of their entire IT budget on outsourced activity this year. More than one in 10 will devote more than 50 percent of their IT budget to outsourcing. Investment in outsourcing in the next 12 months is due to increase for 45 percent of global CIOs. CIOs are increasingly partnering with a wide range of suppliers with 39 percent expecting to increase their dependence on multisourcing in the next 12 months.

IT leaders expand their strategic influence.
Exactly half (50 percent) of global respondents now sit on the operational board or executive management team of their organizations, up 8 percent from last year. Sixty-nine percent of global CIOs now report having more strategic responsibility, which marks the first time that figure has ever passed two-thirds of respondents. They also report expanding their duties to include finding new markets and new channels and increasing transparency.

Learn more about the findings in the 2011 Harvey Nash CIO Survey: Read the full report now. You can also access it on the go through the CIO Survey app for iPad, iPhone, Android or BlackBerry. "During his career, Jim negotiated a series of historic bilateral and multinational economic and trade agreements on behalf of the U.S. He managed hundreds of industry and country experts around the globe in support of U.S. companies, and as a result, he left an important mark on the international commercial landscape," said Miano. Harvey Nash/PA Consulting Group CIO Survey Reports IT Leaders Believe Innovation Critical to Retaining Market Share

(Wayne, NJ, May 9, 2011) -- Harvey Nash Group today released its 2011 Harvey Nash/PA Consulting Group CIO Survey noting that a significant gap exists between the number of information technology (IT) leaders that believe that innovation and technology will help their companies preserve market share (74 percent) and the number of CIOs that have reported achieving their innovation potential (only 34 percent). Interestingly, U.S. CIOs were more likely to embrace IT as a competitive advantage than their global peers (74 percent vs. 65 percent respectively).

The 2011 CIO Survey is a global study of more than 2,500 IT leaders undertaken by Harvey Nash Group and in association with PA Consulting Group. This year's Survey is the sixth annual effort that includes U.S. respondents and the 13th global edition. Harvey Nash USA is a leader in executive search, professional recruitment and IT outsourcing. PA Consulting Group is a leading management and IT consulting and technology firm.

Despite the fact that significant pressure remains for CIOs to increase the IT organization's innovation activity and generate positive business growth, U.S. CIOs reported several encouraging improvements in their roles this year. Collectively IT leaders note that they are perceived more strategically than last year within their organizations (69 percent vs. 64 percent) and their personal level of job fulfillment is higher this year than last (78 percent vs. 68 percent).

Almost a third of IT leaders said they now report to the CEO up three percent from 2010, and 37 percent have global responsibilities up five percent from last year.

"CIOs and senior IT leaders weathered the economic storm and achieved accomplishments that few could have predicted during the recent down turn," said Harvey Nash USA President and CEO Robert J. Miano. "Many became great leaders as they navigated successfully with smaller internals teams under significant pressure. Now they are ready to charge forward assuming even greater leadership roles and driving greater revenue and business opportunities for their companies."

Top on global IT leaders' list of priorities for the coming year are:

  • Managing costs and maximizing savings (67 percent, seven points lower than last year),
  • Enabling business process changes (44 percent),
  • Driving revenue growth (37 percent), and
  • Maintaining cyber security and minimizing risks (34 percent).

Also important to IT leaders are the challenges of managing the complex and sometimes competing dynamics required to simultaneously direct operations, reduce costs and drive revenue. To that end, 40 percent of IT leaders said improving customer service was a key goal for 2011 and 36 percent cited managing strategic relationships with third-party vendors as another high priority activity.

Miano concluded, "Gaining strategic influence and additional responsibility for revenue growth is proof that CIOs and IT leaders have emerged from behind technology doors and become well-rounded, astute executives recognized for their business acumen. IT leaders and CIOs with entrepreneurial instincts that capitalize on their ability to manage costs while driving revenue will be the natural winners in this new decade."

Harvey Nash Survey Reports Executives Believe iPad Increases Business Productivity

April 6, 2011

(Wayne, NJ -- March 10, 2011) -- Harvey Nash Group, a leader in executive search, professional recruitment and IT outsourcing, released executive research today showing that the iPad is not just technology hype. Statistics confirm that tablet devices can have a significant impact on how executives do business, which is timely as Apple rolls out the iPad 2 to consumers this week.

In a survey taken by 134 subscribers to Harvey Nash’s Online Appointments Magazine:

  • More than two-thirds of respondents reported currently owning or planning to buy a tablet device within 12 months;
  • Of tablet users, 91 percent said they believe the tablet increased their productivity, and
  • 75 percent were 'surprised; by how useful the device was.
The survey also reveals that tablet devices fulfill a function in business life somewhere between laptops, smart phones and old-fashioned paper. Almost two-thirds (63 percent) of executives said they used their tablet device as a presentation tool in a meeting; 59 percent reported browsing a digital magazine and more than half (51 percent) took meeting notes on their device.

Almost all participants (97 percent) believe that the tablet will become even more useful in the future. The iPad is at this time the most popular tablet (85 percent of tablet users owned one). New entrants to the tablet market over the next year are likely to reduce this prominence.

Harvey Nash was the first recruitment company to launch an iPad app in April of 2010 and is in the process of providing iPad 2s to its senior management team in 12 countries.

Harvey Nash USA President and CEO Robert J. Miano said, "Executives on the move are using digital tools to work more efficiently. Our investment in iPads for the Harvey Nash executive team, and the development of applications for tablet devices is part of our ongoing strategy to be the leading professional recruitment and IT outsourcing firm."
