The Harvey Nash 2011 CIO Survey: Innovation Rules the Post-recession IT Landscape

Wayne, NJ (May, 9, 2011) - The 2011 CIO Survey was conducted in association with PA Consulting Group to assess the current direction of IT strategy and the prevailing trends within IT leadership the world over. Now in its sixth year in the U.S. and 13th globally, the survey informs, inspires and provides IT leaders with invaluable benchmarks.

This year's survey results revealed a markedly new post-recession IT landscape. As one CIO pointed out, "It's easy to look good in boom times. It's the tough times that reveal who the real leaders are."

Now that the recession is abating and IT budgets are increasing, IT leaders are emerging with increased scope of responsibility and influence. Additionally, the focus on cost-cutting and operational efficiency has shifted back to innovation. While the "Utility CIO" is still in play, the "Innovation CIO" -- who is 29 percent more likely to use innovation instead of cost savings as a competitive advantage -- has reemerged.

Another interesting finding is that less than half (42 percent) of global CIOs felt their organization suffered from a shortage of technology skills. This is a fall of 16 percent from 2010. However, over 89 percent of global IT leaders are concerned about keeping their best and brightest performers. Thirty-five percent express "great concern" that competitors would try to poach key talent in the next two months.

Here are a few more of the many insights IT leaders relayed to Harvey Nash that are available in the 2011 CIO Survey report:

IT leaders prize innovation, but struggle to fulfill its potential.
Almost three-quarters (74 percent) of global CIO Survey respondents believe that if they don't innovate and embrace new technology, their company will lose market share. However, only one-third (34 percent) think they have achieved anything close to their innovation potential.

IT leaders increase their use of outsourcing.
Almost one-third of global CIOs (28 percent) will spend up to a quarter of their entire IT budget on outsourced activity this year. More than one in 10 will devote more than 50 percent of their IT budget to outsourcing. Investment in outsourcing in the next 12 months is due to increase for 45 percent of global CIOs. CIOs are increasingly partnering with a wide range of suppliers with 39 percent expecting to increase their dependence on multisourcing in the next 12 months.

IT leaders expand their strategic influence.
Exactly half (50 percent) of global respondents now sit on the operational board or executive management team of their organizations, up 8 percent from last year. Sixty-nine percent of global CIOs now report having more strategic responsibility, which marks the first time that figure has ever passed two-thirds of respondents. They also report expanding their duties to include finding new markets and new channels and increasing transparency.

Harvey Nash/PA Consulting Group CIO Survey Reports IT Leaders Believe Innovation Critical to Retaining Market Share

(Wayne, NJ, May 9, 2011) -- Harvey Nash Group today released its 2011 Harvey Nash/PA Consulting Group CIO Survey noting that a significant gap exists between the number of information technology (IT) leaders that believe that innovation and technology will help their companies preserve market share (74 percent) and the number of CIOs that have reported achieving their innovation potential (only 34 percent). Interestingly, U.S. CIOs were more likely to embrace IT as a competitive advantage than their global peers (74 percent vs. 65 percent respectively).

The 2011 CIO Survey is a global study of more than 2,500 IT leaders undertaken by Harvey Nash Group and in association with PA Consulting Group. This year's Survey is the sixth annual effort that includes U.S. respondents and the 13th global edition. Harvey Nash USA is a leader in executive search, professional recruitment and IT outsourcing. PA Consulting Group is a leading management and IT consulting and technology firm.

Despite the fact that significant pressure remains for CIOs to increase the IT organization's innovation activity and generate positive business growth, U.S. CIOs reported several encouraging improvements in their roles this year. Collectively IT leaders note that they are perceived more strategically than last year within their organizations (69 percent vs. 64 percent) and their personal level of job fulfillment is higher this year than last (78 percent vs. 68 percent).

Almost a third of IT leaders said they now report to the CEO up three percent from 2010, and 37 percent have global responsibilities up five percent from last year.

"CIOs and senior IT leaders weathered the economic storm and achieved accomplishments that few could have predicted during the recent down turn," said Harvey Nash USA President and CEO Robert J. Miano. "Many became great leaders as they navigated successfully with smaller internals teams under significant pressure. Now they are ready to charge forward assuming even greater leadership roles and driving greater revenue and business opportunities for their companies."

Top on global IT leaders' list of priorities for the coming year are:

  • Managing costs and maximizing savings (67 percent, seven points lower than last year),
  • Enabling business process changes (44 percent),
  • Driving revenue growth (37 percent), and
  • Maintaining cyber security and minimizing risks (34 percent).

Also important to IT leaders are the challenges of managing the complex and sometimes competing dynamics required to simultaneously direct operations, reduce costs and drive revenue. To that end, 40 percent of IT leaders said improving customer service was a key goal for 2011 and 36 percent cited managing strategic relationships with third-party vendors as another high priority activity.

Miano concluded, "Gaining strategic influence and additional responsibility for revenue growth is proof that CIOs and IT leaders have emerged from behind technology doors and become well-rounded, astute executives recognized for their business acumen. IT leaders and CIOs with entrepreneurial instincts that capitalize on their ability to manage costs while driving revenue will be the natural winners in this new decade."

Harvey Nash Survey Reports Executives Believe iPad Increases Business Productivity

April 6, 2011

(Wayne, NJ -- March 10, 2011) -- Harvey Nash Group, a leader in executive search, professional recruitment and IT outsourcing, released executive research today showing that the iPad is not just technology hype. Statistics confirm that tablet devices can have a significant impact on how executives do business, which is timely as Apple rolls out the iPad 2 to consumers this week.

In a survey taken by 134 subscribers to Harvey Nash’s Online Appointments Magazine:

  • More than two-thirds of respondents reported currently owning or planning to buy a tablet device within 12 months;
  • Of tablet users, 91 percent said they believe the tablet increased their productivity, and
  • 75 percent were 'surprised; by how useful the device was.
The survey also reveals that tablet devices fulfill a function in business life somewhere between laptops, smart phones and old-fashioned paper. Almost two-thirds (63 percent) of executives said they used their tablet device as a presentation tool in a meeting; 59 percent reported browsing a digital magazine and more than half (51 percent) took meeting notes on their device.

Almost all participants (97 percent) believe that the tablet will become even more useful in the future. The iPad is at this time the most popular tablet (85 percent of tablet users owned one). New entrants to the tablet market over the next year are likely to reduce this prominence.

Harvey Nash was the first recruitment company to launch an iPad app in April of 2010 and is in the process of providing iPad 2s to its senior management team in 12 countries.

Harvey Nash USA President and CEO Robert J. Miano said, "Executives on the move are using digital tools to work more efficiently. Our investment in iPads for the Harvey Nash executive team, and the development of applications for tablet devices is part of our ongoing strategy to be the leading professional recruitment and IT outsourcing firm."
