Dr John Ashworth
Chairman

John Ashworth joined Barts and The London as Chairman in April 2003. He was trained as a scientist with degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry.

John is a former Non-executive Director of the North East London Strategic Health Authority and previously he held the posts of Chairman of the British Library Board, Director of the London School of Economics and Political Science and Pro-Vice Chancellor for Metropolitan Affairs of the University of London.

Prior to that he was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Salford and Chief Scientist of the Central Policy Review Staff in the Cabinet Office where he advised Prime Ministers Callaghan and Thatcher.

Mr Paul White

Paul White has been CEO of Barts and The London since 2001.  He serves on a number of national and London bodies, including the Advisory Council of Partnerships UK, and works internationally for the Department of Health and Health Quality Services (formerly King’s Fund).

He has held a number of CEO and senior managerial posts including in Scotland where he was a member of the Ministerial Modernisation Forum, advising on the Scottish Health Plan ‘Our National Health’ Chairman of the National Acute Trust Chief Executives’ Group; and a member of a number of Scottish National Health Service Groups and Working Parties.

Mr John Adshead

John Adshead has a degree in Economics and Politics from Exeter University and a MBA from Cranfield School of Management. He has spent his career in commerce and industry, starting as a graduate trainee in industrial relations at the Ford Motor Company in 1968. He joined the Bank of America in 1976 and became Senior Vice President, Human Resources, Information Technology and Administration for Europe, Middle East and Africa. He joined J Sainsbury plc in 1989, where he was Group Human Resources and Information Technology Director until 2004.

Ms Mary Elford

Mary Elford is currently Foundation Director of the London North East Community Foundation – a charitable trust that promotes and supports voluntary and community activity across north-east London. She is also a trustee of the Camden Society which provides services to people with learning disabilities in eight London boroughs.

Mary has an extensive background in retail management having worked for the John Lewis Partnership for nearly 15 years. She began as a graduate trainee and held a wide range of managerial positions before becoming Development Manager for the department stores.

During this time she gained experience in a number of areas including communications, building and planning, and customer service.

Mrs Valerie Owen

Valerie Owen is managing director of a consultancy which advises organisations on social and economic regeneration and sustainable development. She was previously managing director of London First, a business organisation working to improve and promote London. Her professional background is as a chartered architect, surveyor and town planner. Valerie chairs the Sustainable Development Taskforce for London First, is a non-executive director of a large housing association and holds board directorships with the Royal Institute of British Architects and the National Forest Company.

She lives in Tower Hamlets, where she is involved in community work, and was awarded an OBE in 2001 for services to architecture and to the community in east London.

Mr Lutfur Rahman

Lutfur Rahman is head of family and civil law in a firm of solicitors in Tower Hamlets, having previously spent eight years in an established City law firm. As well as his professional expertise, Mr Rahman has many years of experience of working within the local community. He serves on the board of a number of voluntary and community organisations, including the Tower Hamlets Law Centre and the Poplar and Leaside Regeneration Project, which oversees a budget of £23 million, to be spent on community regeneration activities over a seven-year period.

Mr Rahman is an active member of the Labour Party, and is a prospective Labour candidate for Spitalfields and Banglatown Ward in Tower Hamlets.

Ms Baljit Ubhey

Baljit Ubhey is a senior lawyer with the Crown Prosecution Service. Following the completion of her legal training with the CPS, Baljit prosecuted a broad range of cases before going on to become a legal adviser in the CPS' Policy Directorate, then their first national Diversity Manager. She currently manages a team of lawyers and administrators responsible for advising the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Attorney General and other Government departments.

A former Non-executive Director for the East London and The City Health Authority, previous involvement in local charities and community groups includes chairing a charity in east London which provides counselling services for children and young people and membership of the Newham Asian Women's Project which helps women suffering from domestic violence.

Professor Nick Wright

Professor Nick Wright is currently Warden of Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry and Vice Principal of Queen Mary, University of London. Professor Wright studied Medicine at Durham University and went on to train in Histopathology at Newcastle and Oxford universities gaining his PhD in 1975.

He is the Head of the Histopathology Unit at Cancer Research (UK) Ltd, President of the British Society of Gastroenterology and President of the Royal Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland.

Mrs Gail Beer

Gail Beer is the Director of Operations. Gail trained as a nurse at St Bartholomew’s Hospital and worked in a number of London teaching hospitals before moving into management in 1992.

Gail has held a number of posts since then within the Trust across a variety of services including the Cardiac and Renal Directorate.

Mr John Goulston

John Goulston joined Barts and The London as Finance Director in September 2002. After graduating in economics at Hull University, John joined the NHS Southeast Thames Regional Health Authority's finance training scheme.

Once qualified as an accountant, he joined accountancy firm Coopers and Lybrand, where he spent three years in public sector audit and another three in health consultancy.

He returned to the NHS in 1992 - working first as Finance Director of the former Crawley and Horsham Trust for three years, and then as Finance Director of Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust for seven years.

Dr Charles Gutteridge

Charles Gutteridge has been Medical Director of Barts and The London NHS Trust since January 2002.  He trained at Cambridge University and The London Hospital Medical College.  He has worked in east London for many years, initially as a doctor in training and then as a consultant haematologist at Newham Healthcare Trust where he was also Medical Director.  He maintains his interest in medical research and education through his position as a Senior Lecturer at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry.
