Size
The Offshore Development Centre are providing the 300 staff with approximately 40 more provided by Petronas. The estimated effort was 3,000 man-months over 18 months. With 13 months gone 2,000 man-months have been spent on the project.
Background
Petronas is a fully-integrated oil and gas corporation and is ranked among FORTUNE’s Global 500 largest corporations in the world. The company earned over $44 billion in the fiscal year 2005 and employs more than 30,000 staff operating in more than 30 countries. In Malaysia, Petronas runs more than 45 operation units over 6 regions with the workforce of over 20,000.
Requirement
Communicating with such a large work force that uses more than 1500 applications has always presented a challenge to Petronas. The company has used Lotus Notes for its messaging platform, productivity tools and all applications. In 2004 it took the decision to move all of its technologies to Microsoft based platforms (Exchange, .Net, SharePoint, SQL Server etc.)
Our Vietnam Offshore Development Centre was selected to be a prime contractor in charge of key elements of the migration project; applications migration, change management, system integration and training for the IT staff (IT Academy).
The change management service was to ensure that all Petronas users were prepared for the move from Notes to a Microsoft environment.Meanwhile, our partner, Microsoft Malaysia is responsible for converting messaging system.
Solution
The project was conducted in 3 phases.
1. The Discovery phase: getting the right number of applications to be migrated, first-round analysis by Application Analyser and resource estimation.
2. The Assessment phase: drilling down into application business logic, slotting them into migration patterns, and defining the strategy and schedule.
3. The Delivery phase: a tailored version of RUP (Rational Unified Process) to make it more flexible to cater for the repetitive nature of migration work and the large number of applications being migrated.
