The seminar series, as part of the Inspire network, has been designed to empower intimate groups of high-level women and male champions of change through sharing best practice, with session led by business leaders - experts in their fields. The first event in the series took place at the Kee Club, Hong Kong on 12th March 2015, when a select group of 25 guests enjoyed an evening of drinks, canapés and animated discussion focused on the new era of communication.

Members of the Inspire network were delighted to be joined by guest speaker Susan Gilchrist, CEO Brunswick Group who travelled all the way from London to give an insightful talk, sharing her experiences from her career in communications. She shared the latest opportunities and challenges of communicating in the digital age, focused on how female executives can elevate their visibility within their organisations and externally.

Key takeouts from the event include:

  • Women often 'self-edit' and don't put themselves forward for opportunities as a result
  • Transparency is key to changing the current imbalanced situation - companies should be encouraged to publish the gender split of their workforce
  • The financial services industry in particular needs to ensure managing the gender balance of their workforce is a top priority - currently the industry does not have a sustainable pipeline of female talent.

Discussion points centred around the pros and cons of implementing quotas, with many of the audience moving towards supporting the enforcement of a system to make change happen. The advancement of women in male dominated environments, such as the financial services industry, was also heavily deliberated.

The Inspire network itself is a powerful platform for change and the seminar series aims to facilitate new connections between members of the audience and the guest speakers. The second event in the series takes place later in March.
