In this issue: Managing your career during a downturn, Richard Lambert podcast, Leadership in troubled times, Executive Job Index, The Career Manager

Whatever people's political persuasion, one thing is for sure; the United States President-elect certainly understands the power of a personal brand. The policies, the politics, the detail mattered, of course, but above all people chose Barack Obama because of who he was.

The power of personality has always played an important role in politics, but Mr Obama has taken it to new, 21st century, heights. His website, his news feeds, his blogs, his SMS campaign have all served to reach out to people in ways previously unheard of in politics.

Whilst the rest of us may occupy somewhat less elevated positions in life, the one thing we do share with Mr Obama is this - our personal brand matters too. And especially so in a downturn. We'll be talking more about personal branding in the coming issues, but our first article looks at branding from a career perspective and how you should manage it during a downturn.

Elsewhere, we publish a microsite containing a podcast of our latest event where Richard Lambert - director general of the CBI - talks about the economic prospects for the UK.

Also Nick Marsh, MD of Harvey Nash's Executive Search business, shares his own views on why leadership is so important in this time of economic, environmental and - especially this week - political change.

We also include details of the London Stock Exchange's Main Market conference in January, which Harvey Nash is pleased to be partnering. Find out more about the conference and how you can attend.

Best regards,

Rob
