Are you a dinosaur?

Andrew Simmonds, Director, Harvey Nash Executive Search in APAC shares his top five tips to prevent individuals becoming corporate dinosaurs

Dinosaurs are individuals who have worked for organisations for more than 10 years without regular promotions or job changes. They often know the organisation and its systems inside out, and perform well in relation to their role due to their knowledge of the internal processes, their business knowledge, and established relationships with key individuals internally.

However, the days of a job for life are behind us and we all need to keep evolving to stay ahead of the game. Organisations are becoming increasingly agile and cost centric, driven by the eternal quest for shareholder value. They are also more likely to assess individuals through regular reviews, and often have a stronger process in place to determine promotions. Companies will also often promote younger, more affordable talent with excellent qualifications when they are looking for cost savings, or replace employees with temporary talent. All of these factors, coupled with the relentless advance of artificial intelligence (AI), means we all need to focus on reviewing our skillsets regularly.

5 top tips to avoid becoming extinct in the workplace:

1)    Reality check - do not assume you are irreplaceable. You are not! We all need to work at staying relevant.

2)    Keep up-to-date with training, qualifications and memberships - ensure you focus on your continuous development as a priority

3)   Build your network endlessly - internally within your organisation and externally. Building strong networks takes years, so it's imperative you focus on cultivating your relationships. With the rise of social media and professional networking sites, the power of networks is more evident than ever.

4)    Always be honest with yourself and take time to review your situation - what does the future look like at work and will you be part of it? Will your role exist in 10 years time or will AI be making the decisions and leading the strategy? Which direction is your existing company heading in?

5)    Take performance reviews seriously and explore your options internally - be prepared to take on new challenges and stretch yourself.

The end of the dinosaur

If you think you are a dinosaur or are in danger of becoming a dinosaur, take action now! It is never too late to prepare for the future by learning a new skill, gaining a promotion, changing organisations or just simply trying something different.
