A Researcher's role - everyday life as detective

Anyone who is looking to recruit today will be aware of the current state of the recruitment market. Candidate´s tend to have the upper hand and the recruiting companies themselves increasingly set higher demands to avoid wrong and costly hires. This can make for a complicated recruitment process when trying to find and attract the right people. Working with a Researcher in an assignment can therefore be very helpful and something many Recruitment Consultants wish for.

To have a specialist and craftsman in the research field that can find potential candidates and be a partner that one works with to solve the assignment adds value. In a complex assignment with limited access to relevant competence and skillset as well as a comprehensive requirement list, the involvement of a researcher can be a prerequisite to help the recruiting company succeed in their talent strategy.

To be a Researcher is about listening to the clients and understanding their unique business case and what they really need. The two are not always aligned and it is up to you (and your consultant colleague) to ask the right questions to identify what is the real need and who would fit their company best. It is important to have the courage to be able to challenge our clients about who the right candidate is, because it may not be the one they think it is at first sight. Once you know what you're looking for, the next step will be to find the right person for the job.

It is now that you get to lay the puzzle and the real detective work begins. This is your opportunity to use your creativity as well as your experience to identify the right combinations of skills that can be found in the candidates you approach. When talking to candidates and reading all those CVs' it's important to be able to read between the lines and ask the right questions to get more of the specifics and the valuable examples and experiences that so often is not part of the basic information of a CV.

Daring to think outside of the box and challenging the status quo, highlighting candidates that are more junior or senior than what the client originally asked for, or presenting someone with a different type of experience - that adds value and quality. It also helps build trust with the client as well as the candidate, when you can show that you have an understanding for the needs and wishes of all parties. A good detective relies on facts but never forgets to listen to that gut feeling, which is also true in our work as researchers.

We always strive to find and present the best candidate for an assignment but also to find the best next move and role for the candidate. To find the best matching bits of the puzzle as a Researcher you need to know the candidates, the market and outside condition that can affect the assignment. That is our job. Often working with search assignments, we contact many candidates who are not actively looking to change jobs, and this is of course just another piece of the puzzle, as we can show and advise them on new possibilities for their career.
